This building originated in 1860 when Thomas Bain entertained guests in de Vlugt, whilst the pass was under construction. The location is on the lower part of the farm,
some distance away from the tented camp, fresh water pool and lodges, making it more private and ideal for bird lovers and privacy seekers as its location is close to the Kwaai river.
Because of the open plan lay-out and sleeping arrangements this house does not offer much privacy if more than two guests should share. Sometimes, on special request and at an
additional charge we do allow guests to pitch a tent at the back of the house for adults or children - a fun and safe way of camping with mom and dad just a few steps away.
This basic, clean and rustic house offers a spacious open plan living area with six stackable black wood beds. The room boasts a large
indoor fire place, ideal for keeping warm on cold winter nights or even to enjoy a indoor braai if it should rain.
Leading off the room to the back is a bathroom with old metal bath & flush toilet. On the front of the house on the covered stoep, there is another guest toilet. The stoep is
ideal for lazy afternoons. The kitchen is equipped with a large fridge and 3 drawer freezer, a large gas oven with a grill for toast, a kettle for the gas-top oven, cutlery and crockery and basic kitchen
equipment is provided. A table with 4 chairs for dining and a 6 seater picnic bench outside the house as well as a kettle braai. The open plan living area has 2 reading lamps and paraffin lamps are used in the bathroom.
Linen, pillows, blankets for the winter and bath towels are provided - please bring your own swimming towels.
On the outside between the house and the watermill there is a large braai circle with stumps to sit on. The beautiful Kwaai River with its crystal clear pools is just some
50 meters away.
As an optional extra we do hire out the old Watermill which can serve as a private pub or eating area.
Like all lodging at Outeniqua Trout Lodge Bain's Cottage is non-smoking and equipped with "low power consuming" equipment. Please refrain from bringing high consuming electrical
equipment such as 4x4 fridges, electric kettle, hairdryer or toaster. Small electrical equipment like laptops and mobile phones can be operated and/or charged. If in doubt, please ask.
Due to large variety of resident wild and some farm animals we do not allow any pets on the farm.
